A poll by ComRes of 2,047 UK adults between November 7 and November 9 found that 58% supported the use of nuclear power in the UK generation mix, according to a statement Friday by New Nuclear Watch Europe, a lobby group for new nuclear construction.

The statement said that the poll had found that "a majority of British adults (58%) now support the use of nuclear power to provide energy in the UK, including 21% who strongly support nuclear power in the UK.

The opinion poll also found that only 22% were opposed." New Nuclear Watch Europe was launched by Tim Yeo, the Conservative member of parliament for South Suffolk, according to the statement.

EDF Energy's Sizewell-B nuclear power station is in Yeo's constituency.

In an interview with Platts on Thursday, Yeo said that it had been "frustrated by the long delay" before the European Commission's decision to approve the funding of the proposed new Hinkley Point C and the wider start to construction of the plant, the first of a series of planned new UK nuclear units.

Yeo said nuclear power offering an opportunity to cut emissions and increase security of energy supply, a strong political consensus and a long history of nuclear generation in the country, were all factors in the strong popular support for nuclear shown in the poll.
