PWCS Australian coal shippers sent 30% less to China in Sept on month

The Port Waratah terminals at Newcastle port in eastern Australia shipped 611,000 mt of coal exports to China in September, down 30% from August's 878,000 mt and the lowest monthly volume since 608,000 mt in March, the Australian company said in an operating report Thursday.

Shipment volumes for China from the PWCS terminals were nearly three times higher in September 2014 at 1.73 million mt, the decline reflecting the continued slowdown in China's demand for Newcastle coal shipments.

In the first nine months of 2015, China received 9.88 million mt of coal from the PWCS terminals at Newcastle port. In same year-ago period China's offtake volume was 19.67 million mt, the data showed.

China's shrinking offtake volume means it could soon be overtaken by Taiwan, which in the January-September period this year booked 9.5 million mt of coal from the PWCS terminals.
