Portuguese February fossil fuel demand falls 6.5%

Demand for fossil fuels in Portugal in February fell 6.5% year on year to 1.04 million mt of oil equivalent, with coal usage experiencing the deepest plunge, according to data published late Monday by the country's energy department.

More specifically, demand for petroleum products fell 1.0% to 567,000 mt, for natural gas by 5.0% to 325 million cu m and for coal by 24.5% to 278,000 mt.

On the natural gas side, demand for standard power production rose 25.8% to 39 million cu m, but fell for co-generation by 10.3% to 105 million cu m and for other sectors by 7.2% to 181 million cu m.

Coal usage for electricity generation declined 24.5% to 277,000 mt but rose 20.0% to 1,200 mt for industries.

For the rolling year March 2015 through February 2016, overall fossil fuel demand rose 5.3% to 14.83 million mt of oil equivalent, rising by 16.1% to 4.07 million mt of oil equivalent for natural gas and by 8.6% to 3.19 million mt of oil equivalent for coal, but fell by 1.0% to 7.57 million mt of oil equivalent for petroleum products.
